I'm not going to ask which your favourite version is because we are a Meat Loaf Fan Forum and it's pretty obvious what the answer would be.
I've listened to both versions and was thinking if Meat had released the song first, would it have enjoyed the same success as it did with Boyzone?
Both versions must have been recorded at a similar time. Does anyone know if Meat was planning to release it as a single?

He did release it in '98, double A side with Kiss Is A Terrible Thing To Waste, wouldn't like to say whether he would've done better had he released it first.

My understanding is that yes, Meat was intending to release it, and was the person who was meant to record it. He was in London to do this. Amanda had a climbing accident, and he had to return to the USA. Steinman didn't want to wait and went with Boyzone.
It was a song I simply could not stand, until I heard Meat singing it.

I listen to Meat's take on that song fairly regular. But the other group? I don't think I've ever heard their version. I do know and enjoy Dream Engine a little bit though ---something different occasionally.

For those that haven't heard Boyzone's version.

They're a boy band .. made it a nasal whiny preppy poppy bit of fluff. But they were close to the height of their popularity with the teenies at the time, so it shot to #1. If they'd recorded Hickory Dickory Dock it would probably have got to number one! All I can remember is it being played incessantly and absolutely hating it! It had none of the depth and meaning that Meat's version did, nor even the depth that it had in he musical. Imo Steinman sold out this song to get a boyband hit. www.youtube.com/watch?v=YbTZveeNY04

And while I was writing I see Jenna has posted a link . which had I known would have saved me some suffering pulling up the YT link .. lol Oh and in answer to Jenna's original question, probably not. As I said they could have sung Old MacDonald's Farm and had a hit .. millions of crazed teenies would have bought it. hich is why I always considered it a sell-out, because as a piece of musical composition they did it no favours at all imo .. merely provided the vehicle for a pretty much guaranteed hit. One of Jim's children which was sacrificed on the alter of Mammon in my view

When I first heard their version I didn't mind it and at the time, assumed that they wrote the song and there were no other versions. I was about 12 and all my friends loved Boyzone. We were their target market I suppose and my friends probably would have bought anything by them even if it had have been rubbish.
My friends went on about what a beautiful song it was but looking back, if Meat had released it first, they wouldn't have paid it any attention. After all Boyzone had those voices that teenage girls love and they looked good. They'd have taken one look at Meat and automatically said they hated it before he'd even sang a note because he's not some young, pretty-boy with a nice hairdo. They were very shallow. If they'd have heard him sing even, they still wouldn't have liked it because he doesn't have the 'right' voice. It's going to sound a bit silly perhaps but he sounds too much like a MAN (as opposed to sounding like a boy) for them to find the song appealing.
I don't think the song would have done as well if Meat had have released it first, even though his is a superior, more heartfelt version because it wouldn't have appealed to the youngsters who are the ones who influence the charts the most.

My sister was really into Boyzone and I think she's still got the single version of the song and to be honest I had no idea that anyone else had sung it. I'll have to go and find Meat Loaf's version to see what it sounds like. Does his version sound much different?

Obviously Meat has a different sort of voice to Boyzone but his version has far more passion behind it. I really would recommend you give it a listen.
